Fearless Passions

Garden of Eden Driftwood Art
Black Point Secondary School
The crew of Fawkes was lucky enough to spend Christmas at one of our favorite Exumas stops, Black Point Settlement. According to a sales flyer, “Black Point is the largest village in the Exumas outside of Great Exuma.” To us, it’s the epitome of real family life in the Bahamas. No cruise ships, no fancy shops or straw market, just real life in island time.

What you will find are authentic Bahamian restaurants, two internet cafes, a grocery store, and the most interesting Bahamian art exhibit at the Garden of Eden. If you’re lucky, you can volunteer to help at the school housing young children through eighth grade or watch as the elderly, men and women, weave the straw which they then send to Nassau for the big straw markets.

Straw Weavers

This may be off the beaten path for normal vacation spots, but for relaxing, the location can’t be beat. There are several choices for cottages to rent. Long Bay Cottages belongs to Lorraine and her husband Uriah. You can find information about rentals at: Long Beach Cottages
Christmas Dinner

We spend most of our time ashore walking the roadside, beaches and hanging out at Lorraine’s Café where we find a family atmosphere. Lorraine will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Life here is on the honor system. She asks for a donation for internet usage and once Lorraine has given the go ahead, the beverage cooler is on an honor system. You settle up upon leaving.

There were two cottages rented this holiday season and several anchored boats. We were all invited to a wonderful Christmas Dinner. Our host and her mother (a wonderful bread baker) shared fried lobster and dolphin fish, turkey, ham, potato salad, mixed vegetables, baked macaroni and cheese along with peas and rice, a Bahamian standard. For dessert a Lorraine original of spiced raisin cake which was delicious.

This crew made new friendships and felt right at home in our home away from home. Did we miss our family and friends, yes. But there’s a greater world to be explored and our friends and family come along in our hearts and are thought of on days like these. More importantly we stretch out and our family becomes bigger and more enriched.

Our new family and hosts!

We’re thankful for the new friends we meet.

What do you do to expand your family? Do you invite unsuspecting strangers into your traditions this time of year and make life just a bit more sunny?

  1. I just love traveling with you and the Captain! 🙂 I get to visit wonderful places I may never see otherwise in my lifetime. The driftwood art looks really cool. Right up my alley 😉
It is not unusual for us to ask someone to Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner that may have no place else to go , no family close. The more the merrier. We tend to keep the meal simple , less stress, and more FAMILY time.
    Hugs from a snowless Iowa!!!!

  2. Part of why I love traveling is to meet other folks and learn about their culture. Thanks for taking us off the beaten path and introducing us to your favorite place in the Bahamas. I’m putting this in a file so when we want to travel there, I’ll remember to visit Lorraines. Your Christmas dinner sounds lovely, did you make your garlic bread for the feast? Super yum!

  3. Nancy,
Our family Christmas was expanded this year by the presence of your lovely daughter.
We had a wonderful time at Rodney & Wendy’s. We enjoyed so much having Angel with us. She is delightful and I’m sure you are very proud of her.
